Where do local Athenians spend their time?

Top areas in Athens and Attica

Athens’ visitors firstly go to Acropolis and its museum, Plaka, Monastiraki, Psirri, and sometimes they reach Pagrati, Koukaki or Lycabettus hill. Do Athenians spend their time to these places?

Athenian local meeting points (apart from a Sunday walk at Plaka) that are not that famous to tourists are Proskopon Square at Pagrati, or the taverns at Petralona. An Athenian destination is Halandri as well at the north, Mpournazi square at the east for nightlife, Glyfada for something more prestigious. You can get there by taxi easily, Athens taxi’s are quite affordable. Before Glyfada, Floisvos’ Marina is another place someone can spend time and walk near yachts and private boats.

If you want to visit something more Greek, Nea Philadelfia is another region to be with a family as well. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars at the 2-3 squares there. You can follow Dekeleias str. and get there.

Athens for families

If you come to Athens with a family, very close to Floisvos Marina you can get to Stavros Niarchos Foundation at the south. There is a parking there and big space for bicycle. Also Diomedes’ botanical garden is a really interesting place to visit during the day.

Open air cinemas

Open air cinemas is a must for Athenians, especially during summer. Here are some ideas regarding them.

City festivals

Athens and Greece is a rich cultural capital, with on going events and festivals throughout the year.

Attica beaches

Attica offers plenty of choices for swimming. The first area is the south coastline, from Varkiza to Sounio. The eastern coastline, from Lavrio to Marathon, offer choices like Loutsa, for fish and tavernas generally.

Attica Mountains

Athenians prefer Parnitha mostly, since Hymmetus is unexplored except Kalopoula and Kaisariani, as well as Penteli, that visit them during the weekends.

So, except from feeing Ancient Athenian, or Cool, or a 19th century traveller, feeling like a local is always a must!
