Old Agora Square
The square is one of the main squares of Plaka, close to Monastiraki and is located close to the Tower of Winds, next to Roman Agora. There are many restaurants on the square, and also a magnificent central palm tree. You can enjoy a coffee or a nice dinner during afternoon or night. The other squares are Filomousou and Lysicratous. There is live music at Filomousou and ice cream at Lysicratous. You can walk there by turning right while you walking Pandrosou up from Monastiraki.
Historic details of Old Agora and its famous clock
Close to the square there was also the Elgin’s Clock Tower that Lord Elgin (who had stolen Parthenon marbles and today are the main exhibits of London Museum) had donated to Athens in 1814 and was burnt during the Great Fire of 1884. Elgin carried a bad reputation among Athenians, especially after Lord Byron’s poems who accused him for stealing the marbles.
During the Great fire the ancient agora was burned, and it was a great opportunity for archaeological excavations to start.
Where to eat at the Old Square: Ydria restaurant
Ydria is located in Old Agora Square, next to the ancient agora, in Adrianou 68 Street. Its menu includes Greek food with a modern perspective. You can also try fish, combined with a variety of Greek wine.
