Travel through the heart of the Peloponnese (Arcadia) and experience the landscapes that shaped one of Greece’s greatest Independece War heroes, Theodoros Kolokotronis.
Starting from the historic village of Libovisi, where the Kolokotronis family originated, to the battle of Valtetsi, where the first decisive Greek victory inspired a modern nation, this journey combines breathtaking mountain scenery with centuries of history.
Start point: Tripoli.
- Tripoli or Tripolitsa, where the modern Peloponnesus capital is located. Kolokotronis Equestrian Statue & Historic Center of the first main battle of Greek War of Independence, with a desicive Greek victory in 1821.
2. Valtetsi, with the famous 1822 battle.
3. Levidi and 4. Vytina.
5. Libovisi – House Museum of the Kolokotronis Family
6. Piana visit.
7. Stemnitsa & 8. Dimitsana – Historic villages of Gortynia with amazing accomodation options. At Dimitsana there is also a Museum.
9. Monasteries of Philosopher & 10. Prodromou and Lousios river, where you can swim.
11. Karytaina with Karytaina Castle – The “Toledo of Greece”
12. Before returning to Tropoli or Megalopolis and enter National road back to Athens, visit Leontari and Tourkolekas
Kolokotronis route after Arcadia
Visit Ramovouni, its historic birthplace, getting into Messinia. Drive south after Megalopolis.
