From Athens’s learning experience to that of Piraeus:
The archaeological museum has amazing artifacts, especially from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, since during the Roman period the city was destroyed after Sylla’s raid in the 1st century.
What you can see here:
A magnificent complete sculpture complex, dating to Roman times. You will see the wealth of the city since it was the port that is mentioned in Thucydides Pericles’ Epitafius speech: it’s the place where goods from all over the ancient world arrive in Athens. You can see maps of the city that depict ancient ones to the modern ones, ancient weapons, and more.
So, a few kilometers from Plaka, you can discover the glory of Athens’s ancient port, in a museum that is built next to the ancient theatre of the city. From there, you can take the ship to Saronikos or the Aegean islands, or continue your road trip to the Athens coastline. Athens became international when Themistocles decided to make Piraeus the main port of the city.
